Konqueror 3.4 Description

Konqueror is a versatile application.

In addition to browsing files and web sites, Konqueror utilizes KIO plugins to extend its capabilities well beyond those of other browsers and file managers.

It uses components of KIO, the Konqueror I/O plugin system, to access different protocols such as HTTP and FTP (support for these protocols is built-in).

Similarly, Konqueror can use KIO plugins (called IOslaves) to access ZIP files and other archives, smb (Windows) shares, to process ed2k links (edonkey/emule), or even to browse audio CDs, ("audiocd:/") and rip them via drag-and-drop. These capabilities are used when Konqueror is in file viewer mode. The "man:" and "info:" IOslaves are handy for fetching nicely formatted documentation.

Finally, Konqueror can act as a file manager for local files but also, through FTP, WebDAV or other protocols, as a file manager for files on remote machines.

The FISH ("fish://user@host") protocol can be used to manipulate files through SSH, allowing you to use Konqueror as the file manager for almost any machine you can connect to on the internet.

Konqueror is an Open Source web browser with HTML 4.01 compliance, supporting Java applets, JavaScript, CSS 1, CSS 2.1, as well as Netscape plugins (for example, Flash or RealVideo plugins).

Konqueror uses a very capable HTML rendering engine called KHTML.

This engine is implemented as a KPart and as such, it can be easily used by other KDE programs. KHTML is also used by the Apple browser Safari.

Features of the HTML rendering component in KDE 3.4:
- HTML 4.01 compliance.
- ECMAscript 262 support (JavaScript). Notice that ECMAscript can still give problems because websites can detect browsers and choose to ignore Konqueror. Spoofing as another browser will often make sites work anyway.
- Ability to house Java applets.
- Cascading Style Sheets
- DOM1, DOM2 and partially DOM3 support in ECMAScript and native C bindings.
- Full support for bidirectional scripts (arabic and hebrew).
- SSL support (requires OpenSSL).
